The principal sum is the amount of money that is initially borrowed or lent, and on which interest is then calculated.

In a loan agreement, the principal sum is usually specified as the amount that needs to be repaid by the borrower at the end of the loan agreement. It does not include any interest accrued in the course of the loan period.
