A mortgagee is the lender or bank in a mortgage agreement.

The mortgagee provides the mortgagor with an agreed sum of money to purchase a property, and then charges interest on that loan for its repayment over time. They also have legal rights to seize and sell the mortgaged property if payments are not made (repossession).
